Insight into the seat of human consciousness

(Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center) Research led by neurologists at BIDMC has pinpointed the regions of the brain that may play a role in maintaining consciousness. Two components, arousal and awareness, are thought to be two prerequisites for consciousness. The brainstem region responsible for arousal found to be linked to two areas in the cortex implicated in awareness. This network is disrupted in patients with disorders of consciousness. Findings suggest the network could serve as potential therapeutic target for those patients.
